The Selfish Blogger – A discussion :-)

Jenny Connected

there has actually been some discussion about The Selfish Blogger Syndrome, which I would like to respond to with this post. And Alan: I do think that postings in small isolated blogs *can* be integrated into larger discussions. And I would go further to add that if we believe in open, networked learning then we *should* strive to make that integration as effective as possible. I get feelings of ‘who am I to push this post out into the webosphere?’

Blogging for knowledge workers: incubating ideas

Mathemagenic

However, having a vision and installing blogging software is not enough: getting blogging to work in an organisation means helping potential bloggers to find out how weblogs might be useful for them personally and how to sustain blogging in a long-term. Blogging is primarily known as an instrument for personal publishing, reaching a broad and often unknown audience without pushing content on them. Integration

Blogs as boundary objects

Mathemagenic

While blogging might provide a window onto practices of the blogger, on a surface weblog is just an artefact: text, links and bits of other media. Publishing makes one’s weblog traces exposed, so others can learn from them without necessarily engaging directly with the blogger.

What pragmatists might want to know about blogging

Mathemagenic

Publishing to a broad and often unknown audience is what weblogs are primarily known for: one can use weblog tools to make particular piece of information available to others without pushing it to them. Uses of a weblog for conversations with self are up to an individual blogger: a weblog can serve as a tool to collect personally relevant notes and organise them in a variety of ways; this collection then provides an input for reflection and reuse. The Meaning of Depth and Breadth in Education

Jenny Connected

As one blogger has put it, ‘The exact mix between coverage and depth is elusive…’ and these questions continue to be difficult to answer, particularly in the current age when specialisation may be regarded as counter-productive given the changing job market and uncertainty about the future of work.
