Teaching with mobile devices: FAQs [part 1]

e-Moderation Station

There are the purely technical issues such as devices not working or not connecting to the school wifi. A few suggestions: Your school needs someone tech-savvy enough to deal with things like the wifi routers, or general tech issues. It all depends on what we mean by benefits.

Putting social tech two clicks down

However, while there’s a strong current of feeling that we should get beyond the technology to the real benefits and values that go with social media, that’s not always to the fore. SOL also looks like an interesting outfit, that ran a workshop last year on the Practical Benefits of Leading for Sustainability. Wondering whether to try the new Qik streaming app since wifi is good at One Alfred Place.

Is social housing (still) sleepwalking into a digital nightmare?

Social Reporter

Back in 2002 a group of us co-authored a book for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation about why social landlords, and their residents, should be concerned about joining the online world both for its benefits and because of the way public services were going digital. It may also be because the benefits of introducing new technology are not evident or easily realisable.

if I recall correctly) and I happen to be lucky enough to be connected either via mobile data or WiFi, CityMapper is one of the main traveling & map apps I use on a regular basis, specially, when I may need to resort to public transport to get out and about in the city.

or “Get me to the nearest coffee shop, but it needs wifi.” People in a group that see others believing something tend to give their compatriots the benefit of the doubt and, soon enough, begin believing it themselves.

Education Technology Action Group consultation

SocialTech

The purpose of the group is to make recommendations that will “aim to best support the agile evolution of the FE, HE and schools sectors in anticipation of disruptive technology for the benefit of learners, employers & the UK economy", identifying “ any barriers to the growth of innovative learning technology that have been put in place (inadvertently or otherwise) by the Governments, as well as thinking about ways that these barriers can be broken down.”.

UC And ROI: IBM's Truth And Fiction Example

Collaborative Thinking

Using the soft productivity argument might get the project approved - but it may not always result in benefits people can actually measure. If instead you use Sametime to make your calls over your WiFi connection, you can avoid these international fees. I caught a couple of blog posts on the IBM Keynote for UC ( Lotusphere Message: Yes There Is a UC ROI ) and then one on the Sametime blog (see below).

Connected Libraries: project summary and recommendations

Most young people expect the library spaces to offer both digital and physical resources i.e. computers should be available with wifi access. Is your school benefiting from national and local support, expertise and resources?

Online Educa Berlin 2010 Keynote: Building Networked Learning Environments

SocialTech

Talking about networked learning made me reflect on how much my own practice and thinking benefits from the networks and communities I am part of, and the excellent friendships that have come about as a consequence over the years. I wanted to model the benefits of networked learning and use the platform I was given to share ideas, resources and research.

John Tropea - Delicious Social Network KM

In both events he eventually gets to talk about social software within the corporate world and not only how he is benefiting from something so powerful as corporate blogging, but also about how social software is increasingly disrupting the corporate world to a certain degree.

The best laid plans of man and mice… Turns out that even the network administrators could not help me configure my nokia N80 or my iPod touch to connect via the wifi in the auditorium. I recorded my own audio of my talk and was able to post-produce that within 10 minutes of completing my talk and managed to upload it thanks to Stuart and his brilliant ad-hoc ‘portal’ to the internet (bypassing completely the restricted wifi for campus network at the venue).
