Recently AppFusions announced a partnership with iRise ® , a provider of enterprise visualization solutions to allow for simulations of Atlassian JIRA and Confluence to speed enterprise software development. I have known about AppFusions for some time and respect the vision of their leader Ellen Feaheny. I spoke with Ellen at the most recent Lotusphere and they have been working on a number of integration tools.

As a disclosure, one of my business partners, Helix Commerce, is a Canadian reseller of Confluence but I have no direct Atlassian connection. Atlassian was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Sydney Australia. In both cases the product is often introduced into an enterprise through a technical team and then expands to business units as the value is seen. Many large enterprises, like Accenture or Sun, have sanctioned Confluence as their IT approved wiki standard.

Atlassian Confluence 4.0 is Coming

Atlassian announced some of the upcoming features in the next version of Confluence , its enterprise wiki and collaboration tool. New capabilities include: - a new and simpler Wiki editor, including better macro capabilities. auto-formatting of wiki markup, to speed writing and editing. - @mentions (like in Twitter and Yammer), for pinging colleagues and inviting them into a conversation. better page comparison functionality. These are good, solid improvements. Version 4 is in beta.

The first two used Traction Team Page , NYK used Atlassian's Confluence and the SAP example did not mention a vendor. I have covered the Shore Bank example before and project management is one of the main uses (see - Another Enterprise Blog and Wiki Success Story from Traction - Shore Bank ). Forrester’s Rob Koplowitz writes that 2010 will be a defining year for enterprise 2.0 in his report, Enterprise Social Networking 2010 Market Overview. Then, it needs to sell the enterprise on its blog and wiki tools which SharePoint does offer but they are not all that great - to show that point IBM needs to push best of breed options perhaps more aggressively than its own tools (Atlassian and Socialtext for wikis, hopefully we will see blog partners as well emerge). If Atlassian, Newsgator, Awareness, Telligent and others can integrate with SharePoint the way Microsoft customers would prefer, so can IBM.
