Atlassian announced some of the upcoming features in the next version of Confluence , its enterprise wiki and collaboration tool. New capabilities include: - a new and simpler Wiki editor, including better macro capabilities. auto-formatting of wiki markup, to speed writing and editing. - @mentions (like in Twitter and Yammer), for pinging colleagues and inviting them into a conversation. better page comparison functionality. These are good, solid improvements. Version 4 is in beta.

As a disclosure, one of my business partners, Helix Commerce, is a Canadian reseller of Confluence but I have no direct Atlassian connection. Atlassian was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Sydney Australia. Customers frequently use Atlassian’s Universal Wiki Converter to migrate other wikis to Confluence. Atlassian has recognized that a wiki interface can be a challenge to some business users so Confluence 3.0

This release allows you to consolidate your Team Calendars and your personal calendar. The Q3 2009 Forrester Wave™: Collaboration Platforms by Rob Koplowitz is out. It found that “Microsoft and IBM Lotus led the pack based on the breadth of functionality in their offerings. Novell edged into the Leaders’ quadrant with its Teaming product.

Stumbled upon, so to speak, this video from Dan Pink ( Drive , A Whole New Mind ), which in 10 minutes reminds us of what we know deep inside: People do their best work when they're doing something that they're really interested in. Once a week, people are free to work on something that really interests them.

And in doing so, they'll interact & transform surrounding tools - intranets, email (which takes a pounding in the Atlassian / Razorfish slides), etc. James D talks about wikis and what they are becoming. Wikis are essentially about simplicity and openness. So RS's comment that you'll find traces of wikiness (to a greater or lesser extent) on intranets going forward is right, I reckon.

The first two used Traction Team Page , NYK used Atlassian's Confluence and the SAP example did not mention a vendor. A recent Computerworld article, Wikis that work: Four IT departments get it right , provides early adopters success stories at Enel, ShoreBank, NYK, and SAP. This is a comprehensive article that goes into good detail on each example. I recommend looking at the complete coverage. Enel used wikis as a way to make IT materials more accessible to their end users.
