Wanted: Knowledge Assets – Dead or Alive?

Chris Collison

There have been a few threads on LinkedIn KM groups on the topic of “knowledge assets” recently. For many people, they are interchangeable with the term “information assets”, but sound sexier. I think the best knowledge assets combine these perspectives.

A new initiative supporting communities to develop digital assets

Social Reporter

There’s often a big gap between those working in innovative ways in communities to develop our physical assets of land and buildings, and those with the tech skills to use public data and online systems to develop local digital assets. In the first instance Our Digital Community is inviting expressions of interest from people who would like to join a peer network about developing digital assets and enterprises to deliver social impact.

For example, organizations can own assets like websites and other technologies, have payrolls, are bound by law, and have clear accountability. Can buy or sell assets; can sell or procure work externally. I’ve been thinking about how community and organization are intertwined, especially when they are interdependent like they are in churches, synagogues, or mission-driven organizations like Amnesty International.

Now the percentage of tangible assets in the corporations in the S&P 500 has shifted from 66% in 1982 to 16% in 1999 and likely continues to fall (see  Juergen Daum, Intangible Assets and Value Creation ). In its place is the rise of intangible assets as the creators of wealth. Yet, as Louise points out many organizations are still managing people as though the wealth was created by tangible assets, machines, and people are just servants of these machines.
