Blog>> Developing a KM Maturity Assessment that Supports Action Planning

Green Chameleon

I have always been very cautious about KM Maturity Assessments. This white paper describes the thinking and design process we went through, and contains the content of the post-pilot KM maturity assessment that we ended up with, which we are releasing under a Creative Commons Share-Alike license. They carry a lot of assumptions about how KM should be implemented, that may not always be true for everybody.

Update on OldGlobeMOOC and Peer Assessment

Jenny Connected

For me this assessment process is one of the most interesting aspects of this xMOOC. I have thought since the first MOOC in 2008 (CCK08 Connectivism and Connective Knowledge), designed and run by Stephen Downes and George Siemens, that assessment may be the sticking point for MOOCs. In my last post , I outlined some of the difficulties that OldGlobeMOOC is experiencing with the assessment and peer review process.

However, ever since CCK08 I have been thinking about the problematic issue of assessment when learning in a MOOC – (see for example the final paragraph of this post – A Pause for Thought – in October 2008) - so Helene Fournier’s presentation on Elluminate tonight attracted my attention (recording not yet posted – but eventually it will be posted here - [link] ). Autonomy, assessment and guiding forces

Jenny Connected

I think assessment would also fall into place – because it would mean that the control of assessment would be in the hands of the autonomous learners – but as yet I can’t see clearly how this would work – other than it would need to be negotiated. So, if autonomy is the ‘guiding force’ and part of that autonomy is that students want their efforts to be validated and accredited – then students will need to have much more control over their assessment.

#PLENK2010 Assessment in distributed networks

Jenny Connected

I have been struggling to clearly identify the issues associated with assessment in PLEs/PLNs – which are probably similar to those in MOOCs or distributed networks. Is it desirable/possible to assess learners in course which takes place in a distributed network? What assessment strategies would be appropriate? Who should do the assessing? Whether assessment is desirable in a PLENK/MOOC etc. So how to assess large numbers.

#PLENK2010 More thoughts about evaluation and assessment

But the language used has been very confusing, starting with the words assessment and evaluation being used interchangeably – which I was relieved to see from Heli’s comment – I am not alone in being concerned about. Then there is the confusion about whether we are talking about people assessing their own learning within the PLENK course or whether we are trying to decide whether it is possible to assess people in these environments – again two different processes.

Blog>> Why We Treat KM Maturity Models With Caution

Green Chameleon

Every now and then we are asked by clients or potential clients whether we can help them conduct a KM Maturity Assessment. We have used KM maturity models in the past, but I (along with others) am quite sceptical about their utility as KM assessment and planning tools at the start of a KM journey. This means that the overall KM assessment may not be representative of the ground realities in the different parts of the organisation.
