He showed an IT architecture with social in the mix like other capabilities such as ERP, CRM, etc. Social is supposed to help discover expertise across the organization and should not be put in a box in an architecture. If I understand JR correctly, his point is that collaboration tools are great for specific teams. However each team works in its own context and this leads to the creation of silos which prevents cross-organisational leveraging of this material. He also notes that this cannot be solved simply by the implementation of a search tool. I agree with him.

Flexibility and extendability are still the key differentiators IMO, so basing the architecture on Google Widgets makes a lot of sense.
