Bring social computing into portal to solve this problem. and portals: integrated multi-channel user interaction environment, unified access to tools, information, etc. Protect/leverage portal investment. Note: I don't disagree with Oracle's portal-centric approach - clearly, you should be able to surface portal elements within a portal. Jive, Telligent, Lotus Connections are more along the lines of a destination site model.

Understanding Cisco's Collaboration Strategy (Part 4)

Collaborative Thinking

Some strategists include content management, search, portal, and Enterprise 2.0 However, there are strongly related segments such as unified communications (a segment Cisco knows well), content management, search, portal and Enterprise 2.0 Developers have been an integral part of IBM’s and Microsoft’s success in the collaboration market. Cisco needs to articulate its broader direction concerning content management, search, and portal.

Circling Around To Enterprise 2.0 Again

Collaborative Thinking

If you go back to its early-days, SharePoint Team Services and SharePoint Portal Server are the root products. In 2003, the first iteration of a "platform mashup" occurred with SharePoint 2003 that joined Windows SharePoint Services (the evolution of STS) with portal. The 2007 release was arguably the first concerted effort to deliver an integrated platform, adding additional components along the way.

Cisco WebEx Connect Questions

More partnerships - perhaps with Jive or other white label/hosted social/community platforms vendors. Maybe the hosted version of Jive Clearspace? Integration. Will SharePoint integration include Web Parts (similar to what Awareness has done with its SaaS solution)? What about portlets for integrating WebEx Connect with other portal platforms? What about integration with Lotus Connections, Lotus Notes/Domino, Lotus Quickr?

Collaborative Thinking: Social Software Vendor Roundup

Collaborative Thinking

At the beginning of 2007, our customers came looking with a more tool-centric approach, but interestingly most now come looking for a suite of solutions. That might point more towards a tool approach, but perhaps the tool of the future is not one of the categories above but all of them together with a killer strategy to leverage incumbent enterprise data.

Interesting comment below regarding a little debate between Sam Lawrence of Jive Software and Lawrence Liu of Microsoft regarding the recent SharePoint conference. So a good way to look at it would be "these functions are as if my own internal IT team built them" If you take that approach - then you might be very happy to deploy these extensions and improve what Microsoft delivered out of the box. Jive and IBM are trying to wedge (a la cheese ?)

John Tropea - Delicious Community

« Thoughts on Second Life | Main | The MacGyver Approach » August 23, 2007 Avoiding The eRoom Debacle Actually, this isnt fair to the eRoom product. Were going to create some guidelines, a lightweight review process, complete with hands-on help as people approach this. In the end, eRoom deployment in this department did go viral and met the goals; 250 eRooms, 2500 members, integrated suppliers, integrated project management.

List of Social Computing Strategists and Community Managers for Enterprise Corporations 2008

John Tropea - Delicious Community

My current title is Director of Emerging Solutions, User Experience, & Portal Operations. I can certainly add more names from Intel like Open Port community maven Kelly Feller, Tools and Approach dynamo Bob Duffy, BlogMamma Annie Rodkins, Software Developer Community wise men Aaron Tersteeg, Josh Bancroft and Jeff Moriarty… But what I see here in the growing list are so many people I’d like to meet in person.
