What Difference A Year Doesn't Make: Lotus Connections & SharePoint

One of the items I was hoping to hear at Lotusphere 2009 was outlined in a recent post by Guy Creese, Research Director of our Collaboration And Content Strategies group here at Burton. In his post, " Lotusphere 2009: What Might Have Been ", Guy articulates how IBM should have outlined a "surround and integrate" strategy for SharePoint. IBM can use Connections to compete with Microsoft by changing the focus to social computing rather than collaboration and content.

Re-Thinking Follow Models Within The Enterprise

Collaborative Thinking

Current enterprise social networking trends favor the asymmetric approach. The asymmetric nature Twitter approach has been generally accepted as the better practice. If someone you follow updates their status, shares a link or file, “retweets”/replies to a post, then those updates become visible to all followers – if all parties are using the same social network site or application (with some brute-force integration exceptions).

Circling Around To Enterprise 2.0 Again

Collaborative Thinking

The 2007 release was arguably the first concerted effort to deliver an integrated platform, adding additional components along the way. Few organizations back in 2003 adopted a formal enterprise-wide, top-down approach. File-based workspace models regardless of product have an inherent problem as they scale (content, people). We could organize the content within a workspace better. The other item to consider when critcizing vendors and workspace models is "time".

One technical/tactical workaround would be for Saba to deliver modules that integrated within Lotus Connections (via a plug-in/widget of some sort, or through Connections' REST and other programmable interfaces).
