Thinking About How Real Workers Use New Collaboration Tools – the Ford Approach

Michael Sampson - Currents

Among other changes, he comments on the new approach Ford IT took with helping users understand how to make use of the various tools available to them in their work: Many IT departments have had to cut back on their help desk and user support in recent years and have ended up leaving users to their own devices — figuratively, and even literally in some cases. Data and video and audio [collaboration] is the second area of focus.

Making Conference Calls Sound Better - Dolby and BT Conferencing

Michael Sampson - Currents

The ubiquitous "Dolby" sound from the movie theaters is to be trialled with BT Conferencing, in an attempt to make audio conference calls "sound and feel like an in-person meeting.". " BT Conferencing, one of the world's leading providers of audio and video conferencing solutions, is joining forces with Dolby Laboratories Inc. The core BT MeetMe conferencing service was initially supported by traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) based audio conferencing bridge equipment.

Thirty nine percent of video-centric meetings also have at least one audio-only participant, up from 35 percent in June. If you start off with an audio-only meeting with an audio-only service, adding screen sharing or video is impossible.

Academic BEtreat – the technical challenges

Jenny Connected

One of the principles of these BEtreats is that online and face-to-face participants should be fully integrated, so for the most part the online people are projected into the face-to-face room through video on Adobe Connect – where presentations can also be shared. However, bandwidth issues make it difficult to use the audio connection in Adobe Connect, so we also connect via Skype – but this also keeps breaking up.

An enduring insight

I’m a fledgling ESL teacher who learned a few languages through immersion and a self-directed approach. I think it’s the early career epiphanies that make the greatest impact.

Ken Carroll

With language learning this is obvious - podcasts provide up-to-date audio samples of the target language , often upon user request or in response to a problem. Secondly, when properly designed, audio can very effectively intergrate other elements. I’ve never actually heard a user complain of getting lost in the audio because lesson are short and there are clues all over the place. Audio lets you listen to conversations for learning a language, as you said.
