The Second Act: Community Guy Rises

Community Guy

Hello. I’m Jake, the Community Guy. You may not recognize me… I know it’s been a while. Or you have never heard of me, since I’ve been a bit of a recluse lately. But I’m the guy who loves online community and has spent the better part of my career trying to bring community engagement to life in the most impactful, world changing ways possible. So where have I been for so long? Why cut back the speaking and blogging and meetuping? I’m glad you asked. Buckle in, there’s a story ahead.

One hell of a ride. That’s the only way I can describe the last 6 years. It was about that long ago that I decided it was time for me to leave LEGO and strike out on my own. It was one of the hardest, and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

If you were a boy who grew up in the 70s and early 80s, you almost certainly tried to move objects with your mind thanks to Star Wars influence. To this day, I still dream of having such skills. So it was with great amusement that I watched this VW commercial.

The loneliest job in business

Community Guy

While perhaps not the loneliest job in business, a Community Manager, especially the strategy building/implementing type is certainly at the top of the list of lonely career choices. Day in and day out the customers and community members you work with yell at you for being too company-focused, while your colleagues more often than not tell you that you’ve gone native, thinking too much about the company and not enough about them.

I

Community Guy

Let me first start this post out by saying that I have loved the Web since the very first time I pulled up a Web site. Literally the very first one. I don’t remember the site (although it’s likely it had a stone background image), but I do remember the rush of ideas, emotions, and potential that flooded over me the first time I pulled up that site. In the last year or so, I’ve been decidedly harsh in my critique about where the internet has gone in recent memory.

Must Have iPad Apps

Community Guy

As my friends, colleagues, and random strangers have learned, I love apps. I have tested, played, installed/uninstalled a metric ton of apps of various sorts. With the release of the iPad, several folks have asked me lately for my suggestions of must-have iPad apps. Without further ado, here’s my list of iPad apps I can’t do without. Harbor Master – a lot of press has been given to Flight Control HD, another line drawing style game.

Why I canceled MySpace today

Community Guy

When my MySpace account refused to respect my request to unsubscribe all email notifications, I started asking why I shouldn’t just cancel my unused account. In fact, I put that question (amusingly) out to my Facebook friends. Robert Coombs replied with the best answer to the question I could have hoped for: “I can’t give you a single, remotely persuasive, straight-faced reason.&#. Bye bye, MySpace. I really won’t miss you. Business Strategy

SXSW as an API for industry collaboration

Community Guy

Exhausted. That’s about the only way I can describe how I feel after 6 days of SXSW Interactive. To be clear, this exhaustion doesn’t stem from the parties (I only attended a few…and was at home at midnight all weekend) or the 4,592,103 official panels they had this year (I only attended two, one of which is the one where I was speaking). It doesn’t even stem from dodging 15,000+ people this year that attended SXSWi.
