Tinkering with the system won’t help reinvent the purpose of education

Jenny Connected

I am recently retired, so a bit out of the loop, but from my perspective not a lot has changed between 2006 and 2019, in the sense that education has not been ‘reinvented’ – notably there hasn’t been, at government and policy-making level, a change in philosophy.

Open web, newcomers and community tools

Tools change, but I know enough about them to figure out what is needed. The question is where else to look for the tools that support small-scale community and collaboration initiatives for the people who are ready to act on the ideas that are growing in their networks. Could you share which tools and practices do you use to grow trust, communicate and prepare for actions in small scale groups? Walking away from facebook

Chris Corrigan

I would encourage people to go back to, or start blogging, and I’d encourage you to do it in the spirit of 2001 blogging, not in the spirit of “blog as PR tool” that we see today: share things, speculate, use it as a platform for what I call “Open Source Learning.”

Archeology and legitimate peripheral participation

On the way back we reflected on observations and experiences of the kids, getting into the discussion on the activities and tools used to indentify the findings. In October I went with the kids to join as volunteers for recent excavation in Katwijk. Why it’s hard to talk about dialogic containers in English

Chris Corrigan

Perhaps this is why for the most part, people I work with in English are interested in tools and processes, and why we have a hard time explaining the “art” of the Art of Hosting. On the Art of Hosting list today there has been a very interesting conversation about some of the Japanese words that are used to describe space and container.

“But what about naysayers?”

Chris Corrigan

” When I’m teaching participatory leadership or sharing complexity tools, folks who are wedded to traditional linear mind and tool sets often raise objections. In my courses and workshops, often people who are discovering these tools for the first time have their first moment of dread when they imagine themselves trying to “sell” a participatory or complexity-informed approach to their organization, team or, worse still, their boss.

Helping kids learning to move around confidently

Of course, there are also many other fringe ingredients (like managing all sorts of cards with three kids and remember to remind them about the essentials when they begin :), but those are the most important ones next to the focus and consistency of helping the kids to learn how to move around confidently and to use whatever tools are needed for that. Being able to move around without an adult is part of growing up.
