Attending to the invisible ‘Other’

Jenny Connected

Kochi Biennale 2019. Attention is how we relate to the world and what we attend to determines what we see. At this stage in my life I am interested in how I can ensure that what I choose to attend to doesn’t blinker me to the possible implications of attending too closely to a given idea.

Chris Corrigan

Mathemagenic

The difference between a tooth and a bone, as well as their relative sizes are pretty easy to see, but much more emerges in a conversation as people bring their suggestions, questions and background knowledge at the table. Those things are inspired a lot by the conversations in Russian and/or with Russians, which is heavily on FB. And in the middle of it comes Walking away from facebook post by Chris Corrigan, which makes me thinking once again ( comment ): I am sitting on the fence with this one for a very long time – I hardly post anything meanigful on my own FB, but contribute to group discussions and those do matter for building connections and getting somewhere with conversations.

“But what if our people dominate?”

Chris Corrigan

If you are consulting because you don’t know the answer to a question, being absent from the conversations does not help you learn. This is actually easily remedied by designing the session well, but it sometimes helps to have an offline conversation about the way the client feels about participants. Over the years I’ve noticed a trend in consultative facilitations that goes something like this: a client calls wanting to consult with the community about something.

The problem with restricting conversation or writing to only what is both apparently real and unreal (ie actually real), is that you are limited to tautologies: All there is, is this.
