Attending to the invisible ‘Other’

Jenny Connected

Virtual hyper-connectivity has paradoxically alienated us from the warm solidarities of community; that place of embrace where we can enjoy our intelligence and beauty with others, where we can ‘love’; a place where we don’t need the ‘other’ as an enemy to feel connected. Kochi Biennale 2019.

Revisiting Calcutta (now Kolkata) after 65 years

Jenny Connected

I suspect that my parents, for the most part, lived in a British community bubble. I was born in Calcutta in 1946 and lived there until I was eight years old, when my father decided that we must leave.

tl;dr: when you buy something because of its success, when that success was based on community engagement, then kill the community engagement because you’re only interested in scale to sell ads and ad data, things don’t work out. . Community is a commitment. .

Teams, communities and networks: a case of our homeschooling group

Mathemagenic

We had a meeting in our homeschooling group yesterday to discuss what do and how do we actually want to do together after a period of “let’s see where things go by themselves” Over last few months I almost gave up on investing in our local homeschooling community.

Engaged Customer definitions: Super Users, Influencers, Advocates

Community Guy

We know that all community have stratifications amongst their members. Beyond just members with “standard” activity levels, we think about the most active, most passionate, most influential members and how we can get them helping to drive our community, marketing, and business goals. . — Super Users (aka Super Fans) are volunteer community members who participate in a corporate sponsored environment at an outpaced level from “standard” users. Definitions are important.

Open web, newcomers and community tools

Mathemagenic

One of the things that FB does well is an easy way to switch between person-centric profiles that help networking to semi-closed and closed spaces for a community forming and even getting things done (despite all odds :)). The question is where else to look for the tools that support small-scale community and collaboration initiatives for the people who are ready to act on the ideas that are growing in their networks.

The Value of Community Ecosystems

Online Community Strategy

I’ve worked with some form of community my entire career. In 1999 I took a job with TechRepublic.com as “UX Program Manager” and spent 9 months helping design, build, launch and grow what would become one of the largest online communities of global IT Professionals.

Collaboration is the Hallmark of Community

How to Save the World

As our chorus of 25 rehearsed, I was reminded of the incredible sense of community and joy that learning and singing great music together brings. I thank them both for showing us how collaboration, at its best, works, and how such collaboration is the essence of community.

Unschooling myself: traces through time

Mathemagenic

We also talked about our homeschooling community. Something I find amazing every time I experience it – how unschooling as an educational choice for the kids turns to be a personal learning trajectory for us, as parents. Over the years it made me face my worst fears and imperfections, to see and accept things as they are and to learn from that point.

Walking away from facebook

Chris Corrigan

This has major implications in a small community like mine, where big local issues result in people starting rumours, passing judgements and ostracizing and slandering others in a way they would never do if they had to write to the newspaper, or see these people at the General Store.

The politics of translation and the role of staff in Sudbury schools

Mathemagenic

Like the concept of Corporations/Societies that run specific interest areas of the school community – Kitchen, Arts or. In the last few months, I’ve got involved into translating some of the materials of Sudburyschool Hardewijk from Dutch into Russian. This is a strange experience: I’m into the topics of self-directed education for quite a while but didn’t dive in-depth into the specifics of Sudbury schools until recently.

There is a lot of discussions about schools in our house recently.

My personal year of learning about evaluation

Chris Corrigan

While were out there trying to create new things, innovate and respond to novel challenges, build relationships and community, and experiment and fail, evaluation loomed over us like a dark spectre, scolding us for being flakey or demanding that we be more grown up and more responsible.

How Can We Prepare For an Unknowable Future?

How to Save the World

That’s why for me Transition is all about those two elements of preparation for whatever might happen: re-skilling , and building community. And we’ll have to be prepared to offer our skills to our community in return for others’ work in areas they have relevant skills in.

“But what if our people dominate?”

Chris Corrigan

Over the years I’ve noticed a trend in consultative facilitations that goes something like this: a client calls wanting to consult with the community about something. ” Often this looks like elected officials not wanting to dominate citizen meetings, government or agency staff not wanting to dominate community meetings, or executive teams not wanting to dominate the lower level employees.

Why it’s hard to talk about dialogic containers in English

Chris Corrigan

Over my career I’ve had the gift of working extensively in indigenous communities in North America and one of the features of many (but not all) indigenous languages is the fact that they are verb-based as opposed to English which is very noun-based. In some ways it’s too bad that we use English in the Art of Hosting community as our global language!

I have worked with people from various communities of practice, including Open Space, World Cafe, Genuine Contact and most deeply, the Art of Hosting.
