I spent yesterday on the 30th floor of a Canary Wharf tower, with 100 people at Chain Reaction 2011 , a hugely creative discussion about the future of East London that we could see below. Although Big Society wasn’t our stated theme, it set the context: less funding, more expectation of volunteer action and social enterprises, less direction from Government. The march would be a way to start mobilising that action.

I had a variety of meetings in London yesterday - and doing it all required lots of tube travel, walking, and looking (and re-looking) at my maps to figure out where to go. Having multiple exits from tube stations is helpful, but then having to orient oneself on the roads at ground-level is. challenging. But hey.

A historical moment for community development?

So today it has been announced that Community Development Foundation ' will cease to operate as a public body as of 31 st March 2011.' There have doubtless been numerous discussions of the news in a context that acknowledges, first, that CDF had become primarily an agency for disbursing government funds, and their market collapsed; and secondly that in focusing on that role the organisation quickly lost its claim in many people's eyes to be an expert CD agency.
