Online tools to say goodbye to a colleague

Free online Forums

Joitske Hulsebosch

For email-based discussion forums there is yahoo groups en google groups , but there you have to follow all messages or nothing (not completely true, you can follow it by RSS too, but you can't ignore certain threads). I am looking for free online forums where you can set up group communication, for informal exchange and learning with the ability for parallel threads.

Ira Glass on video-storytelling

Joitske Hulsebosch

Via the yahoo-group on videoblogging I found this - longish- video with Ira Glass (There's one with Dave Eggers too!). Via Beth Kanter , we got in touch with Steve Bridger who did a presentation on online fundraising. I missed it, but I'll definitely go through his presentation! It was nice to meet up, but even more surprising is that I only found out back home that he is the blogger of the npf2 blog, which I already followed via my bloglines.

How to vlog a meeting or presentation?

Youtube Google video (apparently with larger hosting capacity) Our media Yahoo video I don’t know about the last 2, but in blip.tv, youtube, and google you have the option to add your blogaddress to your account, so that you can post your video on your blog with one click. I developed a 12-step vlogging process to help a network in Ghana ( GINKS ) produce an ICT4D stories blog. They were amazed that it is so easy to do, easier than maintaining a website for instance.

Mind the edge of the platform

Engineers without Fears

Just as Java & Yahoo! WSJ says Microsoft wants a piece of Facebook. Charlene Li crunches some interesting numbers and works out that Facebook's 42 million users (which may be an overestimate) are worth somewhere between $142 to $238 each. Gav talks about Facebook as a platform of influence and Ross talks about value shifting to social networks. My own experience of Facebook is that it is morphing into a social collaboration portal - with people, links, events, updates.

What mass amateurisation means

Engineers without Fears

Then all of a sudden there was Alta Vista, Yahoo & then Google. I trained as librarian just as the internet hit the mass market a decade ago. Pre-browser, online searching was an arcane, expensive business. You needed to know the obscure syntaxes of a range of different databases. Identifying & then assembling information from different sources was a skilled task. Not perfect but "good enough" for the masses. All of a sudden, everyone was an information scientist.
