Communication vignette

Neighbourhoods

June 2002. This blog is eight years old today, but the following note predates it. I found this text among several forgotten vignettes in a dusty corner of the hard drive. A woman got on the train at Gatwick, although not particularly burdened with luggage as so many air travellers are at that station. I was wearing dark glasses as I was trying to sleep. She clattered through the door between carriages, the sound woke me from a doze.

Is social housing (still) sleepwalking into a digital nightmare?

Social Reporter

Back in 2002 a group of us co-authored a book for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation about why social landlords, and their residents, should be concerned about joining the online world both for its benefits and because of the way public services were going digital. Forecasts suggest that by 2007 there will be many ‘smart’ homes, public services will increasingly be online, and other communication methods may be reduced.

The Riddle of Online Resonance (first installment)

Jenny Connected

What is it that enables a potentially beneficial connection to be made with a previously unknown online communicator? In response to these questions we discuss the possibility of ‘beyond verbal’ communication and the importance of being able to filter and select information on personal and conceptual levels. Learning through connectivity is not a new idea; there is a long history of research into networked learning (Steeple & Jones, 2002; Goodyear et al.,

MirandaNet: Social Networking trivial or mind expanding?

Community Capers

It’s taken a long time but since 1992 MirandaNet members have been learning how to communicate on line. Some members act as e-facilitators or braiders who help to shape the argument, provide interim summaries and change the direction of the discussion (Preston, 2002; Preston & Holmes, 2002; Cuthell, 2005). The exchange of information is two way, as it flows from the wealthy to the less well resourced and back again (Resta, 2002, p. 2002). Holmes (2002).

MirandaNet: Place

Community Capers

The shared space of a network community offers the potential for verbal and non-verbal communication at all times, but the space does not exist only when explicit communication is taking pace. Personal relationships and professionalism are cemented and celebrated in these workshops and other face-to-face events like the ten-year party held in 2002. MirandaNet Fellowship has two Internet-mediated communication systems.

These factors include the place and location on the communicator’s cognitive and network maps, the interplay between personal and conceptual resonance, the lack of visual and auditory cues and the increased possibility for creating weak ties within an online environment. Lilia Efimova (2009) has suggested that frequency of communication, the use of multi -channels of communication, affinity, commitment and attention are all required for establishing and maintaining online communication.
