No it’s not Stepford, nor some other Sci-Fi town but the very real Islands of Jokaydia in Second Life. Joanna Kay opened her spaces in Second Life in November 2007 with leasehold areas offered to other educators to support the cost of the then one sim. Whether recognized by second life addies or real life names, community members continually network and gain recognition for their various and varied educational strengths. Come visit Jokaydia and meet the community members

The first of these spotlighted communities will be Jokaydia a CoP that has its home base in Second Life but impacts on the professional lives of its members well beyond that environment. The Island of Jokaydia is designed to provide a flexible and dynamic space for educators in Second Life which includes informal and formal meeting spaces, plus a range of interesting objects and tools to explore. This month restarts the Community Capers project to case study some of the brilliant examples of communities of practice that exist across the globe.

Through this blog we will hear about communities from a number of perspectives. I will relate my research perspective, we will meet the community managers and members, take field trip to each community and have several opportunities to listen to you the audience open up issues and reflect on each

Participants in open source projects, in Wikipedia, in YouTube and Second Life are no longer merely consuming or using preproduced material, but neither are they at all times acting as fully self-determined producers of fully formed new works; rather, they occupy a hybrid position as produsers of content.

Second Life has been in the news again recently. Second Life is looking to corporate participation as a key element in their future business (see this CNET article ). When Second Life first came out, businesses jumped in hoping to take advantage of opportunities for marketing, collaboration, and other potential business uses of the virtual world. Despite recent changes in upper management and a recent stagnation in new users, the popular virtual world seems to be on an upswing again. The Australian Minister for Censorship has today confirmed what I’ve been reporting for nearly two years: online adult games including Second Life will be banned in Australia.
Incidentally, with regards to online games, some are boxed (closed systems such as Grand Theft Auto), some are box and server (multiplayer such as World of Warcraft) and some are downloadable clients or simply web based clients to a hosted server (Second Life, Habbo). An example would be the use of rooms that look just like real world classrooms with avatars giving students power point presentations as a way to use Second Life for teaching.
