Our paper was an extension of the research we have been doing on leadership in virtual worlds that I wrote about previously . This paper focused on how one’s online identity may affect virtual team member perceptions and how virtual teams work together. Organizations have to decide how much and if they are going to set rules or guidelines for how employees present themselves, especially as options for expression expand to the creation I just returned from the Academy of Management conference in Chicago where I presented a paper that Surinder and I wrote with Professor Rui Huang .

(cartoon via Marketing and strategy innovation blog ) Together with Sibrenne Wagenaar I wrote a Dutch article of 15,000 characters on virtual teamwork. 15,000 is really short for all there is to say! During the literature review one of the best articles we found is the article called Managing Virtual teams by Lisa Kimball. virtual congressional district is the epitome of politician advice and consent, guiding a representative’s policies as effectively as an airplane’s “trim tab” governs its unwieldy rudder. Proponents of Digital Government could use Virtual Districts to erode the resistance keeping the US on paper.

He discussed some ways that virtual team leaders could help limit cultural snafus in teams. As more companies are working with partners around the world and multicultural teams occur more and more often, understanding of cultural differences is important for team members and leaders — for both face-to-face and virtual teams. For these reasons, intercultural training may be an excellent candidate for transfer to virtual world environments.
Previously, Surinder wrote a blog post on his observations about different cultural expectations and implicit communication patterns.

A while back, Betsy blogged about paradoxes in virtual work . Basically, virtual work can both decrease and increase visibility. Since virtual workers can be located anywhere, they are not visible to their managers. However, since virtual workers conduct a significant part of their work on or via information and communication technologies, there is greater potential Yesterday’s NY Times had an interesting article that illustrated another paradox. The article discusses a ‘Panopticon’ like software created by LiveOps, a Santa Clara company that

While not necessarily the central focus of the book, one point he made caught my attention for its relation to virtual teams. Singer recalls one pilot who spoke of how psychologically confusing it is to be at war in Iraq (virtually) all day, and then to get in his car and within an hour be sitting at the dinner table with his family.
Thinking about this experience, I realized that virtual collaboration and virtual work has created a new kind of Recently, warfare expert P. W.
