Example of community in Canada came together to write a toolkit, but when it was done they continued to stay a community. Each group was invited to share what they knew about communities of practice and the previous day’s conference session with other members of their goup. Each group was also invited to come up with a question.

I’ve been co-designing and c0-facilitating a number of workshops for the CGIAR and FAO over the past few years about knowledge sharing, and more recently, this phenomenon people call “social media.” Over time, most of this material will also be added to the every growing “ KS Toolkit ,” another collaborative resource I’ve pointed to frequently.

This was where I had the amazing opportunity to co-facilitate an online workshop with Mihaela Moussou (now Michele Paradise). Just today I received an email from one of the people who took our workshop and he wrote “I still remember your course as one of the absolute best courses in my life. Our relationships - across organizations, countries, even language - became a new resource to share knowledge, learn together, and reduce duplication where This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. They still need to work out their shared identity (what everyone wants out of it, what’s it’s mainly aiming to achieve), and this is probably due to the fact that they need to come together and workshop their needs.

Last week I spent half a day in a workshop on local government knowledge management. What we can do now with social innovation workshops is bring in people who have already got these ideas - and widen it out not just to consultants and freelances, but anyone who has the energy and desire to make a difference to their lives. A toolkit of processes - “Knowledge Jam” or “Open Conference” - multiple small conversations for people to make sense of and develop the knowledge base around given themes. Boring waste of time? Absolutely not, because it gave me some breakthough thoughts
