The need to focus on non-technology factors rather than the underlying tooling was a consistent theme during client visits and telephone inquiries as well as the field research study I conducted on enterprise social networks. Our mental models and values permeate the very coding of the software we use. When people say technology is value neutral, I say people have values and people build software, therefore the software carries the imprint of the designers’ values. There is a lot of understanding of how social tools should work and need to work in enterprise (deeply based on how people interact with others and with interfaces) that must go on top of the technology platform. For a number of years I have cringed every time one of my clients tells me that have or are planning to deploy Microsoft SharePoint as a collaborative platform.

Some of the problems with SP are organizational, some cultural, some in regards to governance, and some with its core technology
- were a product check-list, life would be so easy, unfortunately it's not...
- "emergent use of social software" - gets to how social software is used, not so much what it is
- Some organizations that had solid technology management frameworks treated SharePoint in a more comprehensive manner. Thomas Vanderwal posted an article on Microsoft SharePoint 2007 that has caught traction on other blogs ( Sharepoint as a Gateway Drug to Greater Efficiency... )

Over the past few months I’ve been working on and off with co-authors Andy Gibson , Amy Sample Ward , and Clive Holtham and Nigel Courtney of Cass Business School , on a book about how we can use social technologies for social benefit.
