“In October 2009 I had the chance to be one of the participants that took part into the Open EdTech Summit 2009: Exploring Learning Solutions Together.
To do so, a hypothetical assignment was put onto the participants: to create, from scratch, a brand new university for an imaginary country. We are witnessing a move towards de-institutionalization, from an education that works for the institution towards institutions that work for education, or from a democracy that works for parties and governments or parties and governments that work for democracy.

At other times, you can invite participants to put down their devices and briefly give you their full attention. This does require those with a "speaking" role to act more like facilitators than presenters. It also means that speakers have to accept a more humble but ultimately more powerful role than "the sage on the stage". Tim "Mumbrella" Burrowes is over live blogging (or tweeting) and Katie "GetShouty" Chatfield is feeling the same way. It's important to note that this kind of activity is still limited to certain events full of "webby" people.

In my role as blogmeister for LCB I've done a lot of reading in the communities of practice literature to gain a better understanding of how online communities work. What causes high quality interaction or community disfunction and collapse. One model I've developed is around the roles and interactions members of a community have as participants in that community. Further influence came from What can be done to enhance the community? I thought I'd share my model with the LCB community for feedback and discussion.

Last month, the Online Community Research Network conducted our second study that examines how community and social media professionals engage in the social media ecosystem, Participating in the Social Media Ecosystem . Our goal with the Participating in the Social Media Ecosystem report was to gain more information on how companies participate, how frequently they engage in activities in the social media ecosystem, who manages the participation, and what value participants’ companies have gained from their activities.
We received approximately 125 responses.

For a long time I was flummoxed at times during an anecdote circle when the participants could only give you broad illustrations of what they did at work rather than specific anecdotes. Everyday we tell those closest to us (our family, friends, colleagues) about what happened to us: today, yesterday, last week. Occasionally we'll reminisce about the old days but for those we know well what's worth recounting, what's remarkable, is happening on a daily basis.
