message and also come up with a plan to reach some level of solution/functional parity between its on-premises and SaaS-based collaboration solutions. would like to see Cisco also have a more holistic message regarding collaboration/Enterprise 2.0 However, the go-to-market message remains a bit murky with overlapping sub-brands (WebCenter, Beehive) and messages (collaboration and E2.0). The November 2009 edition of Messaging News Magazine is out, with my article entitled Archiving and eDiscovery for Collaboration Systems (starting on page 14):
" Archiving and eDiscovery for email are a well-understood, even if not so well-practiced set of requirements; but compared to the current status of archiving and eDiscovery for collaboration systems, it’s the gold standard. There are also examples from courts where email evidence has been critical, and given the back-and-forth conversational and interactional nature of email, archiving email messages is not hard.

think it would be very helpful if the Socialtext folks could explicitly answer how Signals supports enterprise requirements for security, access controls, archive/logging (for audit, compliance, and records management), directory integration, and policy management overall (individuals, groups/roles). Without this type of information (despite the well-deserved media coverage), I'm afraid the product will be virtually dead-on-arrival for most organizations that have these requirements for other messaging/communication systems - they apply to these tools, regardless of what we call them (i.e.,

Socialtext announced two major product announcements today: Socialtext People and Socialtext Dashboard. Enter Socialtext People. Socialtext People isn't just an inside-the-firewall social networking tool. It's a networking tool that integrates with Socialtext wikis where people I'm excited about Dashboard, but People really rocks my world.

Socialtext released new mobile device capabilities today , with device-optimized usage from a BlackBerry, iPhone, or Android smartphone. Socialtext released "Miki", for mobile device access to a wiki workspace some three ago; this is an update and substantial revision to its capabilities.

Enterprise Instant Messaging (IM)
Most systems allow instant messages to be logged. People not involved in the instant messaging or group chat session cannot view the content of those communications through the IM client applications. Email can be used for point-to-point communication as well as group communication (through distribution lists or by addressing the message to additional people). Ross Mayfield put forth a pretty interesting question on Twitter (see below). It's a great question - my thoughts below:

Some good points in this post from Adina Levin (Socialtext). Within an enterprise, any type of "Twitter" system will be linked to directory systems in much the same way as e-mail and instant messaging systems are linked via address book synchronization techniques.
Within the enterprise, this will be viewed as a messaging system. For the most part I agree but we're still in the phase were vendors are hyping the benefits and not being transparent regarding some of the "non-fun" aspects of making these systems acceptable for large enterprise environments. I I
