A communication by Smári McCarthy of the Icelandic Digital Freedoms Society on the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative : This really important project , endorsed by the P2P Foundation, was also reported on BBC News : “In recent months a group of local and international people has been working on an initiative here in Iceland to propose reforms in media- and freedom of expression law, with the goal of creating the best environment for publication in the world. The method has been to adopt the strongest protective laws that exist in the world, such as the Swedish press freedom law, the Belgian source- and communications protection law, the New York Libel Terrorism Protection law, and so on, and bundle them into a broad proposal.

Eos was not mentioned at the Cisco Collaboration Summit and suddenly it is at the center of a social media social networking storyline that has consumer and enterprise implications. That said, this theme aligns perfectly with a recent report (see below) Alice Wang and I authored on social media and social networking that addressed similar issues (e.g., For some time I've pointed out the need for the Cisco groups responsible for enterprise collaboration (including unified communications, mobile, WebEx, etc.)

This places social networks and online communities as the fourth most popular category of online activities, ahead of personal email.
Two things this week have shown the weakness of the traditional media outlets in the face of online communities of people. Both instances show the role that Twitter, and online communities more broadly, have to play in questioning, challenging and debating issues raised by traditional media outlets. A new report out this week suggests that the biggest hindrance in the adoption of social media is a lack of knowledge. The statistics, from MarketingSherpa , look at the barriers that organisations cite as having stopped them from adopting social media marketing techniques in their firm. Of the 1,886 firms interviewed who had not embraced social media as a marketing tool, 46% cited a lack of knowledgeable staff as being a significant reason for this. The second most popular response was an inability to measure ROI , with 43% of firms claiming that this was preventing them from adopting social media marketing.
