The phone diagram shown below indicates that I think the phone is on the participation end (unless you reify the conversation with a recording); you have to participate in real time, so it’s synchronous (exchanging voice-mails moves the red triangle toward asynchronous); and it’s a one-to-one experience, so I place it close to the individual end of the spectrum. If we’ve made an appointment to talk and the other party doesn’t respond, I may call them on their regular phone, which rings loudly (and may be a mobile phone that they carry with them).

I set the scenario that at work there may be a task or initiative which involves people from many departments.
Just like Jon Mell describes less use of email by incorporating IM into email (placing it in the same spot where you create a new email)…what I would like to see at the end of an Office Communicator Live Meeting, is to be able to spin this real-time (synchronous) ad-hoc group into an asynchronous ad-hoc group using a social network and group tool. The other day when I posted on social networks and ad-hoc groups , I mentioned these online tools need to mirror both our offline behaviour, and our online real-time behaviour.

Be aware that the way you like to communicate may or may not reflect the needs of others. For synchronous engagements, consider 7-10 minute chunks in your plan. Candace Whitehead, the Facilitator Support Specialist for the Florida Online Reading Professional Development project funded by the Florida DOE and housed at the University of Central Florida [link] contacted me last month inviting me to participate in a web meeting with the cohort of online facilitators working in learning and particularly around literacy issues.

synchronization of read/unread marks, de-duping of redundant feed items, etc). Sure - people may not want to pay for a feed reader when there are so many free ones available but that's really not the key blocking factor - just one of several. Employees may not know about feed readers and feed syndication (an awareness, education and training issue)
The article below is interesting in that it does call out a dark truth - enterprise adoption of feed syndication tools has been lacking. However, However, the article disappoints because it gives too much credit to feed readers
