This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. figured it would be good to exercise my memory a bit and unearth some of the key stories that led me to to my social media use today, and perhaps surface some of my patterns. The history approach also shows that while the term “social media” was not in play when I jumped in, the social use of online media has been growing for many I These roots are significant because our patterns of use, our ways of embracing or rejecting technology are

Over the past few months I’ve been working on and off with co-authors Andy Gibson , Amy Sample Ward , and Clive Holtham and Nigel Courtney of Cass Business School , on a book about how we can use social technologies for social benefit. It’s going to be called Social by Social: a practical guide to using new technologies to deliver social impact and it should be published and distributed by NESTA next month. There’s case studies, a sort of routemap for planning and starting projects, lots of how-tos and an A-Z of key terms. Amidst the serious

image through ericmackonline.com This post may be a little chaotic as I'm using it to get a grip on some of my ideas about social media for organisations. Tomorrow I'm going to write with Sibrenne Wagenaar ; we are writing a booklet on social media for learning and collaboration. We start with social media for professionals (individuals), then teams, then organisations. It's the organisational chapter that needs much more thinking. I

Social Ripple Social Marketing
The main thing for me was to chat with Affiliate marketers about how social networks pass information around. You don’t need a big social network yourself. They are primarily one-to-many channel (blogger sets theme, tone and subject) and the social network sees the “finished product” - and While you are reading the presentation outline below I’d like you to think about the Twitter change today. Today Twitter turned off “see replies to those I’m not following”.

With the publication this month of the Internet Advertising Bureau’s ‘ Social Media Ad Metrics Definitions’ , it seemed a good moment for me to write about the thorny subject, and have a look at some of the controversy around the measurement of ROI in social media. The ROI within social media has long been a bone of contention, and seems likely to become ever more so, with the equally lightning spread of both social media use and savage budget cuts. I’ll ll return to the IAB’s publication later, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the background into which it

I’ve been co-designing and c0-facilitating a number of workshops for the CGIAR and FAO over the past few years about knowledge sharing, and more recently, this phenomenon people call “social media.” Social Media Strategy Planning & Measurement - What’s Working?
With social media, however, strategy is a compass, not a map, 8221; Part of this work has been to comb through resources and create some launch pads that are relevant to NGOs and non profits. I

have a client who once said to me: “We want to use social media to attract more complaints” . This may seem an odd thing to say, all to often attracting complaints is a reason people cite for being anxious about using social media . People use social media for lots of things, but they often use it to express their opinion about a brand or organisation, to tell you where things are good and to tell you where things are bad. We look at Freemium revenue in social networks and online communities including asking that: if freemium is the business model of giving it all (or most) of the services away for free , how can you then charge for it? In this episode of Social Media Business podcast, the concept of freemium is introduced – what it is, how Flickr, LinkedIn, SecondLife are making millions of dollars from giving stuff away for free. And what is free stuff anyway – marketing? advertising?
