The thing is that nowadays (Whether using IM tools, Twitter, Meeting Rooms, whatever) I just can’t live without those backchannel chats, whether I’m attending a team conference call, a virtual event (Seminars, webinars, workshops, presentations, conference events, lectures, etc. Are there any good resources out there you could leverage to get things going? I can’t remember the exact date when I first took part in a backchannel chat while participating in a virtual event; I guess it must have been a few years back when I first started making use of Lotus Sametime for group chats while at work, back in the early 2000s.

I was in London last week at an event sponsored by my European partners Open Knowledge and one of our clients, Kent Council on leveraging Social Capital for organisational performance. (slides While there were a few presentaions we also had the opportunity to engage the audience of mostly local government staff in extended conversational workshops. slides here [link] ). Consistent with the heading on this post I heard that in managing local government partnerships the majority of the time and effort was spent in trying to design the governance rules, developing governance documents, communicating

Many will disagree that privacy is a concern only to certain demographics and many will also disagree that people have to cede privacy simply to leverage social networking. It can be hard to find an actual disagreement at Davos, given the social effects of sticking a lot of people in workshops and asking them to flesh out the future of the world convivially.
Earlier this year, Facebook's Zuckerberg said that the age of privacy is over . At the World Economic Forum in Davos, LinkedIn's Hoffman echoed that sentiment (view the video below) - musing that privacy was an issue of "old

Dion Hinchcliffe is leading an opening workshop on Implementing Enterprise 2.0. Tim O’Reilly definition, “Network applications that explicitly leverage network effects.” The other is that the content can be leveraged as the content is persistent and discoverable. I have long been an admirer of his work and was pleased to see this session.

Another option for those wishing to leverage attendance at Catalyst (on top of all the great Burton Group workshops, sessions, guest speakers, etc). Alice Wang and I will be exploring the intersection between identity and social networking during the workshop below:

For now - I've included the presentation Alice Wang and I delivered at the Concordia Workshop. Social media inquiries have dominated by inquiry load since May - primarily driven by interest in Twitter and how to leverage that particular environment in a manner that satisfies risk concerns (especially for regulated enterprises). It's been a while since I've had time to blog so apologies for the disappearance but between workload, conferences, travel, and vacation - my work queue has been pretty backed-up. Hopefully I will get back to a more regular routine.

Conference Workshop – Part Two
He mentioned that Christian Finn of Microsoft did tell him that Bing, which leverages the innovations of the semantic web technologies world to provide linked contextual answers, is a purely consumer play, while the FAST technologies are the enterprise search engine for the enterprise. I greatly enjoyed this years Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston.

And if you're looking for yet another reason to attend Catalyst, Burton Group is hosting a Concordia workshop (details below) that, in part, will bring this topic more out into the open.
Accomplishing this feat in a sustainable fashion enables organizations to leverage its network of connections across employees, customers, partners, and suppliers for competitive advantage (e.g., One of the interesting outcomes from my contextual research project on enterprise social networking was not only what was said by study participants but what was "not said". I'm not sure if there are no examples, but there may not be many well-described cases of how communities of practice were intentionally nurtured and leveraged for enhanced knowledge sharing and innovation for development. The community grew quite organically after two workshops organised in the year 2000. The main communication tools are the discussion Talking to people from MDF , a training and consultancy firm, we had to conclude that there are few practical examples of communities of practice in a development context, so I'll try and search harder (haven't even started the whole km4dev journal for instance).
