A sneak preview of my up-coming column in the next edition of Inside Knowledge …
Last month I had the opportunity to work with a network of business improvement professionals ( the I&I Network ) who wanted to understand where knowledge management tools and techniques could complement their world of LEAN, Six Sigma and Kaizen. They could tailor their own custom toolkit with just the right amount of “Geek Factor” and not too much learning curve.

Exactly a week ago, the Ministry of Manpower ‘s (MOM) intranet team jointly organised a session with the Information and Knowledge Management Society (iKMS) to share the former’s experience in revamping their corporate intranet. they held a naming competition to generate buzz; the winning entry was MOMster @ Home;
they offer short video tutorials of under 10 sec on using the new intranet;
they work through departmental reps, held regular engagement sessions with them, and send them “MOMster Blasts” or e-newsletters to keep them updated;

All of this got me thinking about how on-target we are in the way we exchange knowledge, good practices, worst practices and stories. Despite our best efforts, do people sometimes miss the mark when it comes to knowledge exchange?
As knowledge professionals, we work hard to use processes and social technologies to bring people together collaboratively. Urinals. Do you spend much time looking at them?

Over the next few days I expect to announce some bits and pieces of community-building toolkit that I’m making open under Creative Commons. Due to the sickly condition of the Spanis economy, the options are four: either I get fired before year-end, or I manage to consolidate my employers’ community consulting practice (built solely on my shoulders) or I jump ship to build my own, or I jump ship for a different job (and, likely, country). At the end of August, the Spanish beaches become deserted of working-age natives: all trundle back to jobs and desks (if lucky) in their disparate, beach-less cities.
