I can’t remember the exact date when I first took part in a backchannel chat while participating in a virtual event; I guess it must have been a few years back when I first started making use of Lotus Sametime for group chats while at work, back in the early 2000s. of them over the course of the last few years, they have now become an indispensable and integral part of how I enjoy these kinds of events myself. The thing is that nowadays (Whether using IM tools, Twitter, Meeting Rooms, whatever) I just can’t live without those backchannel chats, whether I’m attending a team conference call, a virtual event (Seminars, webinars, workshops, presentations, conference events, lectures, etc.

I caught a couple of blog posts on the IBM Keynote for UC ( Lotusphere Message: Yes There Is a UC ROI ) and then one on the Sametime blog (see below). On average - using suggested retail prices,  it would cost approximately $450K to purchase 5000 Sametime licenses including maintenance, two hardware servers, pay someone to plan and install the software and servers, and pay an administrator to maintain the system. Thumbs-Down: A few good tips and examples but also some "buyer beware" tactics that folks should be aware of.
John Del Pizzo from the IBM Sametime team responded to my post - but, I'm not persuaded by the counter-arguments.    the total cost of ownership is not clearly outlined, a reasonable TCO model would establish a timeline (say 3 years) and include the total costs, including various weighting factors for planning, operational support, integration costs, help desk, change management, and so on." While our goal for the Lotusphere keynote was to provide Point 1 He dinged us on: "...the
At one time, IBM quoted that Sametime had around 20 million seats and Microsoft has said that it has around 10 million seats of Enterprise IM deployed. As an integrated component within a UC platform, it was thought that enterprise IM would finally become a reality. business case, ROI, security, compliance, integration with UC) are pieces of the puzzle. Instant messaging has not taken off in the enterprise as have other communication tools, such as e-mail. This number might be off a little - but compared to e-mail for instance - deployment of enterprise IM has been disappointing

In his post, " Lotusphere 2009: What Might Have Been ", Guy articulates how IBM should have outlined a "surround and integrate" strategy for SharePoint. traditional collaboration and content platforms), then it can then work over time to erode a SharePoint collaboration/content commitment by introducing Quickr and Sametime for instance. IBM has to do superior and native integration between Connections and Microsoft productivity One of the items I was hoping to hear at Lotusphere 2009 was outlined in a recent post by Guy Creese, Research Director of our Collaboration And Content Strategies group here at Burton.
would add an open integration and interoperability framework - a UC platform should not equate to "single vendor". The idea of migrate at your own pace actually makes IBM's approach with its Sametime Unified Telephony approach suddenly look pretty good. UC will increasingly span across the PC, browser, and mobile phone for truly integrated voice calling, email, IM, conferencing and presence on the go. I thought I would offer some comments on some UC predictions offered by Gurdeep Singh Pall, who heads Microsoft's UC group: No Jitter | Microsoft: Gurdeep's UC Predictions
