Founded on the sovereign’s need for approval during the contentious later years of the aristocracy (an approval that eventually was withdrawn), the public sphere served as a check on the state. The idealized model for networked publics is, as Yochai Benkler suggests, that of a “distributed architecture with multidirectional connections among all nodes in the networked information environment”. Whether network culture plants the seeds of greater democratic participation and deliberation, or whether it will only be used to mobilize already like-minded individuals, remains to be seen.

A great resource for information on not-for-profits and social media is Steve Bridger ’s nfp 2.0 They can share photos and videos, join discussions and regional (or State-wide) groups and learn and gain support from people who have been there before. Within the AARP community, over 10,000 members connect to share information, provide and accept support and advice, discuss organisational goals and generally enjoy themselves. A busy week at FreshNetworks has meant that we’re a little later than expected bringing you the third in our series of Online Community Examples .

This not only lends it a level of credibility but also, and perhaps more importantly, means that they have information and data to share that others won’t.
This is a great example of engaging a passionate consumer base (and indeed a fan base), and the blog is a great way to share information and knowledge. It’s reported that 75% of Mini owners in the USA are now a member of the community, providing People are always asking us for great examples of online communities in their particular industry, so we thought we’d start a series of great examples from different industries: Online Community Examples .

The promise of co-creation is that getting customers involved in the innovation process, and letting them inform the design of new products, will mean that you develop a product that is better suited to their needs and will ultimately perform better in the market. It is not acceptable for any community members to talk about a named person (that they know or do not know) and tell untruths, or give away that person’s private information.
