Goals come from internal processes. We have individual Frankl In lean management, a pull system is a natural flow of activities driven by the natural pace of the work that produces value. Today I stumbled across this quote from Viktor Frankl, whose book Man’s Search for Meaning is surely one of the top 10 influential books on my world view.

To create these conditions, we have three major goals (and a lot of smaller goals / objectives) for the next 12-24 months. The goal of igniting and keeping a fire under a new conversation will include ongoing discussion at this blog, as well as the development of other blogs. The goal will also include a new means for engaging the dialogue – a new website for the CDI is clearly long overdue.
The vision of the Community Driven Institute is a healthy, vibrant, resilient, peaceful, humane world. To make that vision a reality for all of us, the mission of the Institute

It's a good checklist of things to avoid, but I keep coming back to number 1:
