The interesting thing from this panel session though was how none of the speakers focused the conversation on the technologies they were using, but on the inherent issues of making use of these social tools; concerns about compliance, security, privacy laws (Specially in European countries), mandating the usage of social software were just a few to mention.

In the process it has helped me to clarify Stephen Downe’s distinctions between groups and networks, the way that certain tools seem optimized for different levels of these granularities (for example blogs are better for networks than for groups) and it has helped us to create a rationale for use of collectives in formal education. Data from TNS showed that use of social media and social networking in Russia is widespread, making it the fourth largest market in Europe for social networking behind the UK, Germany and France.
