The Opera browser, since June 2009, comes with an important extension: Opera Unite can turn any computer running the browser into a server that will share designated data with peers on the net, directly, without the need to upload. When the alpha version of Opera Unite was first made available in June 2009, two articles appeared to introduce the new feature and outline a vision for it. Version 10.10 of Opera which includes the Unite feature, runs on Unix/Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.

The Online Community Unconference is scheduled for June 10th in Mountain View, CA. Walmart.com, Linden Lab, Flickr, AARP, Nokia, Autodesk, Cisco, CafePress, Cadence Design Systems, Sony Online Entertainment, O'Reilly Media, Inc., The Online Community Unconference is one of the largest online community events in the area and we expect 300-400 online community and social media professionals to attend with 50-60 collaborative sessions on timely social media and online community topics.

Examples of applications that are significantly improved by the existence of context specific social graphs within them are Digg , Flickr , Del.icio.us and Twitter which all don’t require a user to add themselves to the site’s social graph to utilize it’s services but get more valuable once users do. Tapping the incredible content of networks like Flickr and the practice of Creative Commons licenses to use that content.
Flickr, Twitter and other social media tools now augment and enhance the blog - often woven into the blog with widgets. Without Skype, email, Google docs, Flickr, and publishing on demand, this book would not have been born. This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. I

These social objects form the frame of focus for discussion and social interaction, be it a photo in Flickr or a post in a persons blog that is being discussed in the comments or tagged, annotated, or blogged about in another post, much of the social web is built upon social objects or the creation of sociality around objects. In the past I have describe Flickr as a narrow folksonomy , which is a rough synonym for collaborative tagging. Later blogs came along, then sites like Flickr (photos) and YouTube (videos) for user-generated rich media. Other sites, like Flickr, incorporate social network features to support the core activity of the site, which in the case of Flickr is photo publishing and sharing.
