I was just having a little think about Facebook’s news yesterday that it won’t be putting a CEOP panic button on all of its pages. Instead Facebook says it will have links to organisations including the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre on its reporting pages. Although I’m a huge supporter of CEOP’s marvellous work, I have to say I can see Facebook’s point. Grooming activity is not the only reason why people may want to report a post – think of bullying, copyright, hate crime, terrorist activity, inappropriate language or imagery – there are a multitude of

Why this cow should be challenged: Many organizations are doing a poor job of evaluating the opportunity for community on their own domain, and are setting up outposts on large social sites like Facebook because it is relatively easy and (initially) inexpensive. In our “Participating int he Social Media Ecosystem” research project from January of 2010, we saw that only about 1/2 (56%) of the participants had a comprehensive social strategy in place – meaning, only 1/2 of the organizations had spent time assessing and researching where their community currently

Research released by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in the UK suggests that people are growing increasingly tired of requests to join brand pages or install brand applications in Facebook and other social networks . The research found that almost two in every three of the 2,000 respondents to the survey were fed up with the constant requests to join groups and try new applications.
Digging deeper into the research reveals more information. When asked what they disliked most about social networks, the most popular response (with 31% of respondents citing

Callan Green has just published a great post on Mashable about brands who are really getting it right in Facebook Fan Pages. To make the most of Facebook Fan pages (or Bebo, any other social network), you need to actively engage with your fans. Phillips, herself a mother of ‘millennials’ – roughly defined as those who were pre-teen at the turn of the century - quotes her own research into how young adults view brands who attempt to ‘befriend’ them Sure, she says, “anyone can build a fan page in under 10 minutes, and some big brands may even attract fans without any real effort.

The Online Community Research Network is currently conducting our next research project regarding social media ecosystems. Specifically, we want to understand (and help others understand) how organizations are managing their hosted and external (think facebook, twitter, etc) online community touchpoints.
The The research targets online community executives, strategists, and managers, working both in the commercial and non-profit space. If you would like to participate in the study, you can find the research survey here:

An ecosystem research exercise should be conducting as part of a strategy development (or strategy course correction) exercise in order to discover where the off domain centers or activity are, and who the most vocal and active participants are. It’s also important to research activity on the “walled garden” communities, and larger social media sites that some times don’t surface in search results. This post is part of an ongoing series about developing an online community strategy . As a reminder, all posts are being tagged #ocb2b .

For too many brands the first thing they do is go to Facebook and set up a fan page. Research from Sysomos , reported in TechCrunch , shows that Fan Pages in Facebook are not always as popular as some brand might think, or hope.
The research looked at 600,000 Facebook fan pages on Facebook and looked at how many fans they have. Image via Wikipedia
It can often seem like the simple, and obvious step for any brand.

common debate among those working in marketing and social media is between engaging people on your own domain - in an online community that you build and manage yourself - and engaging people where they are - out in social networks like Facebook and MySpace or on YouTube, external blogs or forums.
But it’s not easy to send them from YouTube to a discussion on a forum and then to join a group in Facebook (for example). Image by MattRhodes via Flickr

Facebook status updates tell us the emotional health of the nation and the Gross National Happiness of members. This is quite a different use of sentiment and Facebook:
Every day, millions of people share how they feel with the people who matter the most in their lives through status updates on Facebook . 300 million ? 400 million?

We know that Facebook has seen staggering growth in 2008. Reports in January of this year showed that every 20 days, Facebook is adding another 10 million users . We know that it’s not just college kids on Facebook anymore, with 276% growth since October 2007 in members aged 35-54 . We even know that people are now having But now there are reports that show an even deeper acceptance of Facebook, of it penetrating new areas of society. Facebook is the most visited social network , with nearly 1.2 This also represents significant growth, with visits to Facebook up 36% on December, and 256% over the previous twelve months. Facebook’s continued growth is certainly impressive, and their success in 2008 is probably due, at least in part, to their continued innovation during the year. Data released today from Compete.com supports what will not be a surprise to most. billion visits in January 2009.
