This week: Nestle's Facebook Furore; Evan Williams' and Gaga; The Bing Thing in China; and social media in the loo. Amid growing speculation that Google is on the verge of quitting China, the company has received a letter purporting to come from its Chinese advertising vendors. and empowering – remember that Facebook interview from SXSW’08 ?) Google Wave is going to take this digitally-enabled conference back-channel a step further. At the recent Ecomm conference delegates were provided with Google Wave accounts. Here’s what happened: an audience Image courtesy of Shutterstock Twitter has quickly become the must-have channel for conference back-chat.
This then ties up my lifeblob account with my Facebook account. At this point though, I haven’t been told if this has been announced on my Facebook timeline or if I’ve suddenly become friends with or a fan of Lifeblob on Facebook. Then I’m asked if they can contact me using the email address which I don’t actually use anyway (I’m totally unable to change it with Facebook for some reason). Signup forms are always a pain in the arse. For For a long time, the volume of email addresses captured (as if they could get away) has been a pointless
Research released by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in the UK suggests that people are growing increasingly tired of requests to join brand pages or install brand applications in Facebook and other social networks . Rather than a brand trying to engage people separately in Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and every other social network and forum site, it is better to use these as gateways to somewhere else. The research found that almost two in every three of the 2,000 respondents to the survey were fed up with the constant requests to join groups and try new applications.
We’ve posted before about how businesses can use Foursquare and only yesterday about Fourwhere , the Foursquare and Google Maps mashup. It is highly improbable that the day will come when millions of people together will not mean money.
You can do this on a wiki (with comments) or Google Docs (with comments), but the more robust tools I came across were Traction , Basecamp , and Activities on Lotus Connections . I’m finding tools like IBM’s Activites and Google Wave as the new email/IM/attachments space…where conversations take place using a multitude of tools, are threaded in an open place, and don’t have to take place in an existing group space, but instead can be created on-the-fly when the activity arises. A little while ago I talked about not so much groupware, but a middle space, moreso activityware, where you create an object and invite people to add to it.
