Forrester recently released a report on What’s Holding Back Your Intranet? They found that 93% of employee respondents said they use an intranet or company portal (Forrester uses the terms interchangeably) at least weekly, and more than half reported daily use. In fact, Forrester reports, “Most enterprises at least try to offer usable online experiences to their prospects and customers — but continue to inflict user-hostile internal systems upon their employees.” by Tim Waters with Matthew Brown and Sara Burnes. Facebook has seen a surge of 513% of Senior Citizens and over 55’s joining in the USA. Australia too has a massive increase in seniors in Facebook and social networks generally in the last year or two. Computer users aged 55 and over are the fastest growing group to sign up to sites such as Facebook and MySpace, often using them to keep up to date with the lives of family and friends, especially grandchildren interstate and overseas – assuming they aren’t among I want to offer some links for the statistics I quoted for an article in The Age and another one in the Sydney Morning Herald on the phenomenon:

common debate among those working in marketing and social media is between engaging people on your own domain - in an online community that you build and manage yourself - and engaging people where they are - out in social networks like Facebook and MySpace or on YouTube, external blogs or forums.

Sally Falkow reports in Blogs are Better Business Drivers Than Social Networking Sites that a recent study “ Harnessing the Power of Blogs ,” (sponsored research by BuzzLogic and conducted by JupiterResearch, a Forrester Research company) found that blogs can have more impact on purchase decisions than social networks. blog allows you to go beyond the sound bytes in Twitter and Facebook status fields.
