Even as I include that definition, I feel that we must also acknowledge, via Jay Cross, that informal learning occurs by many means (especially face-to-face) that can't be controlled or programmed, but by its nature when the learning comes through exchange with other human beings, it is social learning. a collection of people who can be identified by a something that they have in common, a kinship, an interest, an organizational tie, a membership. I recently tweeted an observation of David Weinberger' s on how our language has shifted: Over the past decade, we’ve gone from talking about social circles to social networks.

I’m delighted that NCVO and RSA have come up with a way to explore the future of membership organisations in a world where people may feel that paying subscriptions isn’t always worthwhile if they can easily get information, advice and connections online.
It’s an issue that Simon Berry and I started to pursue with others through The Membership Project , with initial RSA and NCVO support. Membership is by no means a new fad. However, before the study quoted in the WSJ gets your board all fired up to institute a membership program, there are words of caution you may want to heed.

Hell because in our multi-membership, we dilute relationship, become overwhelmed, or fall into group mind narrowness by only associating with those who think like us - just because we can. After an hour or so, children were exchanging information about their seat locations, and were getting up and saying hi.
