This week: Nestle's Facebook Furore; Evan Williams' and Gaga; The Bing Thing in China; and social media in the loo. No-one could say Facebook’s trajectory hasn’t been stratospheric (well, they could, but they’d be wrong). But - sticking with the Chinese theme for just a moment longer - some new figures throw Facebook’s success into sharp relief. Welcome to eModeration's round-up of all that is intriguing, alarming or odd in the world of social media, compiled by Kate Williams. For more social media snippets, follow her on @emodkate - or for general twittery, @KateVWilliams.

But some have now opened it back up after realizing that blocking such sites, especially Facebook, at hospitals for employees also cuts patients off from their support networks.
Social media is excellent for crisis communications: Only a few weeks before the shootings at Fort Hood, Scott & White Health Care established its social media policies. For example, one hospital now tweets updates from the operating room with patient's written permission.
Hire leaders: One way to spur adoption is through hiring. As I blogged previously , I've been at South by Southwest Interactive these past few days.

Callan Green has just published a great post on Mashable about brands who are really getting it right in Facebook Fan Pages. But even if you have 3 million fans, if the extent of their involvement with your brand is that at one point they “became a fan,” is that really benefiting you?” She’s listed five really good examples of Fan Pages: Pringles (viral videos) Coca-Cola (authentic message and respect to fanbase) Starbucks (great status updates) Adidas (linking to social media campaigns) Red Bull (incorporation of Twitter into Fan Page) Invited comments below her post are pulling

Back in June 2007 I wrote a popular tutorial on writing Facebook platform applications with Ruby On Rails . Time has moved on since and Facebook has launched Facebook Connect which allows you to integrate Facebook into your own sites allowing authentication, registration, friend connecting, and Facebook feed posting in the context of your application. Mashable has a great post on 10 great implementations of Facebook Connect including Joost At Made By Many we are fans of the possibilites of Facebook Connect for lowering barriers of registration, extracting social graph and injecting your social media functions into the daily online life of users.

Vitamin Water’s latest flavour, launching in March this year, was developed and named by the brand’s Facebook fans. The black cherry and lime flavoured drink will be called ‘Connect’ and one Facebook fan, Sarah from Illinois, won $5,000 for her role in developing this new product.
The competition was interesting and unique in that it used Facebook fans to develop all aspects of the product:

For too many brands the first thing they do is go to Facebook and set up a fan page. Research from Sysomos , reported in TechCrunch , shows that Fan Pages in Facebook are not always as popular as some brand might think, or hope.
The research looked at 600,000 Facebook fan pages on Facebook and looked at how many fans they have. Image via Wikipedia
It can often seem like the simple, and obvious step for any brand.

These are my personal perspectives only. Thursday, May 17, 2007 Banning Facebook in the Workplace One of the biggest aspects of web 2.0 is the growing nature of social network sites such as Facebook (which is growing at a phenomenal 5% a week).
