The quality of the cross-examination varied wildly (“What’s your favourite bourbon?”) - but the exchanges did throw up a few golden nuggets, including an insight into the thinking behind new Twitter service @anywhere; a definitive answer to the question “will Twitter be sold or merged in the next 2 years?” (“No”); and a brief but tantalising insight into the interior landscape of a thirty-something tech whizz (“What am I thinking right now? The app is called iGroups, and lets users geo-connect, and exchange info without throwing privacy to the wind. Welcome to eModeration's round-up of all that is intriguing, alarming or odd in the world of social media, compiled by Kate Williams.

In distributed production, argues George Papanikolaou, the largest part of the energy produced is intended for individual consumption, limiting the field of the market to exchanges of energy. Since the product of their labor does not have an exchange value, but a use value for a community of users, it is characterized by the production and distribution of the product of labor outside the market sphere (a post-capitalist form of the organization of production).
This article by George Papanikolaou appeared in a special issue of the Greek bi-lingual Re-Public magazine, Issue on P2P Energy, 2009

If you are a technology steward, it’s not only a great tool but it’s also a handy example for illustrating some of the use and integration issues that we have to deal with and be able to talk about.
If you follow this discussion about how all of them work together, you’ll have a good example of the approach we developed in Digital Habitats to make sense of platforms in a way that brings out the issues around tool comparison, duplication, and integration.

You probably already know that Skype is a great tool – especially

Or to take Anderson’s example, Encarta sales didn’t bring in money equivalent to the exchange value it destroyed for Britannica et al. Craigslist employs fewer people than the industries it destroyed, for example. He stated this assessment in even sharper terms in a comment under Michel Bauwens’s blog post on the exchange:
What’s variously called the “ cognitive capitalism ” model, or Paul Romer’s New Growth Theory, assumes that technological progress and increased efficiency will lead to “economic growth” in the sense of the total volume of monetized economic activity.

This week we are turning our attention to the telecoms industry for our series of online community examples . There are not as many examples of good online communities for the telecoms industry as in some of the other industries we have covered so far in the series. Therefore many example of their use of social media are actually of them allowing people to communicate in social networks and on other sites. If you have industries you’d like included in future weeks please vote in our poll or contact me on Twitter .

8220; Unequal exchange was built into the labor market from the beginning. That unequal exchange results not from the sale of labor-power as such, but from the fact that privilege (state-enforced scarcity of land and capital) makes land and capital artificially costly and forces labor to sell itself in a buyer’s market, paying a premium for access to the means of production. This is why effort is the source of all exchange value. We regularly engage in dialogue with Kevin Carson, whose mutualist approach I find very interesting, in particular because it suggest a reconciliation between the market and peer to peer principles.

We wanted the exercise to function as an exchange between members of the group rather than having a formal external evalution, so John had about 5 teleconferences with small groups of people, and we had a face-to-face session yesterday. This exercise is a nice example of that for myself; though it was good to have the face-to-face meeting, I feel I learned most from the preparatory teleconference where we discussed the evolution of our domain, and the talks afterwards where Sibrenne and I had the chance to ask all our questions about community leadership. The e-collaboration community of practice, a group of people working for development organisations in the Netherlands (which started a blog on its domain here) is almost one year old and the 'facilitators' decided to ask an external person, John Smith , to look back and help to design the next steps.

IMAC concludes that it's indispensable to contract someone specifically to promote exchange and learning between members, connect and follow-up. In Intrac Praxis Note 16 (available in English and Spanish), Brenda Bucheli and Gabriela Romo describe some of the outcomes of a workshop on communities of practice held in Mexico at the beginning of this year. The participants were from SNV , PACT and IMAC .

A wide variety of groups and networks were studied, like a farmers group producing a journal, an exchange programme, a listserv and email discussion group, and information sharing group on livelihoods and gender equity and a group championing women's rights. The example which struck me was the example of the MBTI synergy group: The MBTI Synergy Group was a spontaneous creation of all the people who attended the MBTI accreditation course in April, 2004. (MBTI SCD and Intercooperation have commissioned a study called Experiences with communities of practice in India , an important resource published in december 2005.

This seems to be a group which is very confortable exchanging online and making use of internet groups to get answers to their technical questions. Four institutions worked together to organise a tech forum in Kumasi: GINKS , a network on ICT for development, the Kofi Annan Centre , a center for exellence in ICT, Kwame Nkrumah University for Science and Technology and IICD . The whole idea was to bring people together and reinforce the community of practice of technical ICT people- working from the idea that some informal of a community of practice may exist but is not supported

The two-hours webcast where participants from Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Ghana, Rwanda, Kzakhstan, Moldova and the USA exchange experiences on their e-government projects is available online. (Ghana can imagine a face-to-face meeting would have provided much more opportunities for participants to exchange and dig deeper. (Picture: One of the ministry buildings in Ghana) The World Bank has embraced communities of practice as an important strategy for knowledge management. They have a question and answers section on communities of practice .
