Companies are purchasing seminars to help educate expatriates and those working in varying cultural contexts. (See See this NY Times article about cross-cultural training effectiveness). However, companies are also trying to cut down on costs for training and other “extras”, and some intercultural training methods, such as one-time seminars, can be of limited effectiveness. Previously, Surinder wrote a blog post on his observations about different cultural expectations and implicit communication patterns. He discussed some ways that virtual team leaders

Don Tapscott:
“A modest country across the Atlantic that’s turning into the world leader in rethinking education for the 21st century.
It also scored some of the lowest educational achievement results in western Europe.
Portugal has been careful to invest in teacher training to capitalize on the possibilities of the laptops in schools. Interesting reportage in the Wikinomics blog , about the recent experiences in Portugal.
(however, however, do read the comments for more sceptical accounts from the field itself)

Virgin Trains. Richard Baker is General Manager for Virgin Trains in Wales and North-West England, and he has been showing how individuals in a business can make effective use of Twitter to engage customers. We analysed his activity to show the mix across the seven ways businesses can use Twitter: sending out information on offers , informing people about what’s going on, responding to people and taking action , listening to what people are saying about Virgin Trains, correcting inaccuracies in things other people are staying, educating Image by JMC Photos via Flickr

Last week there was an article published over at Harvard Business Review ’s The Conversation blog that surely attracted plenty of attention all over the place, not only because it certainly is a very good read, but also because it touches base on a key point for a successful adoption of social software within the corporate world: Training on Social Computing .

am amazed by the breadth of interests that people have in the area and the innovative research that has been conducted on topics such as education, leadership, e-business, and networking within virtual worlds. The variance in conceptualizations and ideas is fascinating and educational.
Christian Wagner of City University of Hong Kong discussed how he uses Second Surinder and I are currently attending the Mardi Gras conference on virtual worlds in Baton Rouge along with our colleague Rui Huang . We are here to present our paper that I discussed in last week’s post and

Taking one of the last trains on Christmas Eve from London to the north of England. And like many people I have spent the last few days checking the weather and the news, hoping that my train will run and I will make it on time.
In the UK we’ve seen a lot of travel-related issues recently: the story of the Eurostar cancellations is well documented online, flights, trains and the road is also disrupted .

Like many people I will be travelling later today.
