Despite the President’s Massachussett woes, Obama’s social media team continue to build upon their reputation as the hippest to the hop with a Whitehouse iPhone app , which will stream the President’s upcoming State of the Union address live to users. The experiment will offer five of this year’s entries, and will last only as long as the festival – though the video portal says it will also offer a “small collection of rental videos … across different industries, including health and education” once the Utah movie showcase has ended. Welcome to eModeration's round-up of all that is intriguing, alarming or odd in the world of social media, compiled by Kate Williams (@emodkate).

Obama is not the perfect vehicle for progressive ambitions, but that does not mean there is not a historical opportunity for social change, argues Dale Carrico , who regrets the kneejerk purist reactions of many on the left. We will need to push Obama from the left to keep him strong in the bloody fight for Unions to come (probably the definitive fight of this historical moment in the grand scheme of things), and to move him to a more universal healthcare system than the one he is offering now in the name of needed reform. For months now, I’ve been calling Obama the Social Media Candidate (and eventually President), and a number of people have raised an eyebrow wondering what I mean. The first blog post on the new Obama administration Whitehouse.gov site answers the question. This site will feature timely and in-depth content meant to keep everyone up-to-date and educated. Just like your new government, WhiteHouse.gov and the rest of the Administration’s online programs will put citizens first. Our initial new media efforts will center around three priorities:

Eventually we could see more clearly not just what the government is doing, but also how well what it’s doing is actually working—for instance, tracking education reforms through a matrix of crime and employment data to gauge the rippling effects of policy decisions in something like real time, and adjusting them accordingly. How well is data-driven democracy doing? In the Washington Monthly , Charles Homans has an extensive investigation into the
