Google is clearly very, very keen to socialize its offer, and, as a follow-up to its recent launch of Social Search, it’s effectively turned Gmail into a social network - in the process delivering what Mashable is calling a “hybrid of Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and Yelp." In December 2008, global consumers spent an average of just over three hours on social networks . In December 2009, they were spending over five and a half hours on average. There, the typical social network user spent an average of nearly seven hours on social networking sites in December 2009. An increase of 82%.
According to The Nielsen Company , social network sites have grown in importance globally in 2009.

Examples of applications that are significantly improved by the existence of context specific social graphs within them are Digg , Flickr , Del.icio.us and Twitter which all don’t require a user to add themselves to the site’s social graph to utilize it’s services but get more valuable once users do. Then I came across this video about Caterpillar’s sharing culture and their 4,000 CoPs. There were a couple of things in the video I don’t agree with but hey, I’m in a good mood so I’ll lay off!
