These tiny communities producing “ the dark matter in the belly of YouTube “, the “ genesis of culture ” on the web, are threatened because brands can’t easily monitise this kind of dangerous, illegal or utterly bland content, so why store so much of it? (There’s Maybe it’s finally becoming somewhere that can handle culture (art, masterpieces ?) At SXSWi, I was expecting to be sold the shiny digital future, but what I found was something stranger and unsettling, somewhere fragmented, confused. Is the web getting a bit existential?

Culture is really important for collaboration technology to work in a group or organization. If the culture isn't right, "collaboration" as a human process expressed through various communication and collaboration technologies can't take root. met with a new client earlier this week to talk about a senior management attempt to encourage "collaboration", but the stories the two people I met with told about the organizational culture made me write the following back to them:
"Collaboration" I Collaboration" will fail at your firm, because of lack of trust.

We initiated the Online Community Culture study in October of 2008, as part of the ongoing research agenda of the Online Community Research Network. The intention of the study was to get a broad look at the factors that influence online community culture, and the steps community managers and strategists take in cultivating, and in some cases influencing, a community’s culture. Manuel Castells has some great things to say about Citilabs , a digital cultural center in Cornella, Barcelona, which I had the occasion to visit two months ago, and fell in love with, because of the enthusiasm and solidarity of the staff, and the great combination of high digital culture with an integration in the working class neighborhood where they are located. Yes, I’m talking about culture. Indeed, it’s all about a cultural shift, one that is starting to take the corporate world by storm at multiple levels, going from a grassroots bottom-up approach all the way to a top down executive level. So I thought that today I will put together this blog post to start talking about something that it’s been on my mind for a while and which touches base on how receptive, open and collaborative the culture of a particular business needs to be in order to adopt and embrace social software. If you ask some people out there what social computing and social software are all about for them, they would probably tell you that it’s all about the tools, about this new set of social technologies, about all that fancy stuff that you can do on the Internet nowadays in a much simpler and more effective manner, without being too technical for that matter.

As a car sharer, the driver has to acknowledge that this is not their private domain, and the car no longer becomes an extension of their living room or bedroom, as is noted in much literature around car cultures (Morris, Sheller, Simpson).
