Another barrier is that you can’t really share the same level of abstraction (wavelength, understand each others way) with lots of people, and it’s a close level of abstraction that really makes a community thrive, as well as a fertile ground for optimal knowledge transfer. This community is not about deliverables, it’s about people learning, building their knowledge and helping each other out, so they can ultimately be more productive and effective when going back and working on their team tasks. I’ve pondered a lot about broad communities vs specific communities, and have always said when you can go for a specific community, do so.

In the study, one of the causes that led to the dysfunctionality of the CoP was the lack of a leadership renewal process. It made me think of the flight of pelicans. Pelicans prefer to fly in V-shaped formation because it reduces drag and saves energy on long migrations.

While membership and participation is voluntary in a CoP, how do we handle the psychological dependence that could emerge? It was most disturbing to hear of how easily members could sign up with a gang but how difficult and life-threatening it could be to get out. Recounting his fight for freedom from the gang he joined, a young lad narrated how threats to harm his family members were made, how he was beaten up so badly he had to stay 4 days away from home so his family would not see his bruises and how he finally won his freedom.

The case describes the efforts to assist 10 huge cities in the Central American Region to improve their technical expertise and municipal effectiveness by connecting mayors and their staff into forming communities of practice. The initiative followed the move of the World Bank to become the 'knowledge bank'. Eight topics were selected by participants (from e-government to disaster prevention) and seven CoPs were started, bringing together 128 members from 10 cities. Etienne Wenger wrote a case study in 2002 about Ayuda Urbana , a constellation of communities of practice focused on urban issues and challenges in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean region, or as they call themselves: 'Red Inter-municipal'.
