CoP portal before community building We helped a loose network of NGOs set up their CoP portal, with the help of Phase 1 money from a donor development institution. was very pleased with our proposal, which described a multi-level learning, CoP and IT-enabled processes. Foreign exchange RISK CCLFI won a project funded by a bilateral development donor agency. Apin Talisayon’s Weblog – Knowledge Management provides useful TOOLS but it leaves MANY GAPS – Oops! (Learn Learn from My KM Mistakes) Oops! #1.

focused on CoPs in a learning context –> From: Darren Sidnick’s Learning & Technology: Community - because without people, you just have a pile of content. This is the third post surfacing a bit more about Community, Domain and Practice mentioned in the series on communities of practice (CoPs). Here is Wenger’s explanation of Community in the context of CoPs.
Here is the third in a series of guest blogs I did for Darren Sidnick, reblogged here with his blessing!) Or worse… nothing!

Thought I’d share a few slides from a presentation I’m giving at work on Communities of Practice (CoP) from a knowledge management perspective.
I also borrowed from a model by Shell on the concept of a Global Network (CoP), shown to me by Mark Bennett from Learning Collaboration .
Sense-making KM and CoPs - Just-in-time vs Just-in-case
My aim was to contrast traditional KM of conscripting best practices, with a new approach based on sensemaking pkm and networks …more appropriate tools, design for emergence and ambient awareness , and amplifying how we get things done offline…basically a more cognitive science approach over management science.

believe this is happening a great deal, as now people may have a more purposeful or ideal way of achieving their needs that they were once achieving by being in a community.
NOTE: I want to stress in this post I’m referring to *pure* CoPs, ie. I’m not refering to teams using CoP-like social software, like Basecamp as a group space to coordinate and communicate tasks/project.
A while back I blogged about the possibility of networks and blogospheres cutting into the need for communities. I

I think the deployment of our CoPs is a mix of a KM demand and supply strategy . see *some* of the CoPs we already have as a breeding ground or testing area for the worthiness of future business units.
Actually Actually CoPs are a perfect example of an enterprise 2.0 Our Communities of Practice at work are currently in the development stage. As we learn the software and develop guides we are also piloting lots of various communities to learn about structure, and human dynamics.
