Connecting tribes
Will connected tribes become the drivers for a radical renewal of democracy? Local groups could even set up citizen deliberative programs, pilot projects or even official institutions in their own communities, and network with other community groups who are doing the same thing, to share experiences. Certainly the connections across tribes allow us to construct what has been called collective intelligence . After the family unit proper, which is a special kind of group, based on the desire for sexual reproduction and the raising of a “new crop” of humans, tribes are the smallest natural groups in which we humans find safety and comfort.

I’ll share one of my idiosyncrasies with you, but promise you won’t laugh: Most people go to the library to find books — not me. 8221; Being authentic guarantees to “differentiate you from everybody else, including those who share your niche or business model.” Visit my About , Services , Media Buzz and Connect pages to learn about Building Your Audience and Brand on the Web . When I accompany my kids to the library, I take my own books with me to read while waiting for them to finish.
Think that’s peculiar?

A chat is useful for alerts, for sharing, for conversations, for negotiating meeting times, and on and on. Once you have a chat connection with someone the possibilities for collaboration increase dramatically.
It’s important for an audio conference to be initiated by the person with the fastest and most stable Internet bandwidth: if the host is on a dial-up connection or an overloaded wi-fi network, it will impact everyone.

You probably already know that Skype is a great tool – especially for community leaders.

We concluded that what councils need in order to share so-called “best practice” is not more consultancy, reports and databases, but video clips, conversations, and encouragement to tell bad stories as well a good. The event was organised by Steve Dale , who works with IDeA on improving how our councils operate - in his case by developing communities of practice for knowledge sharing, with Michael Norton, as I reported here .
Last week I spent half a day in a workshop on local government knowledge management. Boring waste of time?

wanted to share some of them, and find out what you use and how. Patrick Lambe and the folks at Straitsknowledge created a deck of cards to introduce people to knowledge management and knowledge sharing methods. The back of each card has an element or idea relating to “attend,” “intend,” suspend,”extend” and “connect. I love things you can touch and play with when facilitating face to face. This is probably why I was so attracted to the “drawing on walls” involved in graphic facilitation , kinesthetic modeling and just plain

For this post, community is defined as a group of people with bounded membership who have some shared, congruent interest and interact with each other over time. Some of the sub-skills include creating connections that are object or content centric, vs the more traditional relationship-centric mode in communities, more pattern seeking instead of linear sequencing of learning actions or activities. Reflective practice It has become clear. I’m long-winded on the topic of new skills for knowledge workers and learning professionals, even if I don’t quite understand what

I’ve been co-designing and c0-facilitating a number of workshops for the CGIAR and FAO over the past few years about knowledge sharing, and more recently, this phenomenon people call “social media.” thought I’d share a few of them on this blog. However, when they become connected, local actions can emerge as a powerful system with 8221; Part of this work has been to comb through resources and create some launch pads that are relevant to NGOs and non profits. This afternoon I’m spending a half hour on a Skype video conversation to share a bit of how I use social media. remember Ran Avrahami, a professor in Israel, and how he jumped into the conversations and reached out and connected with us. Global Networks & Knowledge Sharing
I figured it would be good to exercise my memory a bit and unearth some of the key stories that led me to to my social media use today, and perhaps surface some of my patterns.

Funny enough, that has been like that for quite a while, having gotten started around 2001, when I was first getting exposed to Knowledge Management (KM or Knowledge Sharing, whatever you would prefer) as time and time again I kept bumping into multiple knowledge managers wanting to define it. Steve Barth ventured, earlier on this year, into putting some very thought-provoking arguments on the need for one, after all, and he shares his favourite one :
" Most of the folks out there who know me, and have been following this blog for a while, have probably realised by now how much I dislike definitions, and putting labels on things, in general.

Filtering is picking and choosing from what you scan to apply it or share it with others. This is an added layer of discernment over scanning and a more systematic practice of tagging and saving, and a connecting of information to work and other people. This is also tied to the next skill of connecting. It is hard to let some Tony Karrer disappointment persist. After posting my 4 Meta Skills for Learning Professionals in response to Tony’s July “Big Question,” he commented:
