The Best from the Communities and Networks Connection Community

Robin asked me about the differences between communities and networks and this 3 minute recording captures my views. continue to be focused on the space between communities and networks, thinking that this is the sweet spot for so many things people are trying to do. Maybe you AREN’T looking for a community, eh? Last month in Rome Robin Good took me to a park, put me in a funny little bicycle car and we drove around the park recording our conversations. Nice job, Robin!
A while back I blogged about the possibility of networks and blogospheres cutting into the need for communities. believe this is happening a great deal, as now people may have a more purposeful or ideal way of achieving their needs that they were once achieving by being in a community. NOTE: I want to stress in this post I’m referring to *pure* CoPs, ie. This doesn’t mean communities are no longer relevant…does it? I cross-functional group spaces to learn about a topic (*usually* comprised of people across different teams).

The Economist on social networking - world of connections This week,  The Economist, every Capatilist’s favourite magazine, has published a special report on on social networking . Introduction: A world of connections “Online social networks are changing the way people communicate, work and play” What joy. A World of Connections , provides an excellent overview of the current state of social media for those still trying to get to grips with it.
Someone mentioned the other day that, “The number of members in the community was small, so the use of the CoP was very minimal” Sure you may have lots of activity, but does the community have a rhythm, is everyone happy with the types of things being posted, or would they sooner get away from the noise and huddle in a corner with a batch of people they really gel with and have some some engaging conversations. As a general statement, that has nothing to do with it. There’s no reason that small member CoPs won’t thrive, just because of the quantity
In a past post I elaborated on social networks like Twitter as being a Help engine; an alternative to a search engine in some cases in finding answers and making decisions. by connecting you to a social network of people you trust who will be willing to help out in a reciprocal relationship (which which also helps out in the re-contextualising process as you share a common wavelength or level I also paralleled this concept to the aims of KM, productivity, performance, sense-making, decision-making, etc: “I think it’s getting us closer to the KM productivity (sense-making) aim that knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer has always aspired to, which is:
Now that we are a couple of months into the “signal sharing” of the Communities and Networks Connection , I wanted to share the top posts people have clicked into on the site (courtesy of the magic of Tony Karrer ).  Understanding Communities of Practice - Collaborative Thinking , March 6, 2009 Crowdsource as a way I find that sometimes I am paying attention to the site, and other times it is off my radar. Communities and Networks Connection Nancy White and Tony Karrer have teamed up to create a brilliant blog aggregation site called, Communities and Networks Connection . This is not a community (it’s not a group space where we have an agenda)…and it’s not a network as the sources or readers don’t connect with others or have their own view of the network. If like me you are absorbed with the web, as a result of participating, you would have built up a great deal of sources that are your filter on many topics. I have
