Starting this year, WikiSym aims to explicitly broaden its scope , exploring not only the thriving wiki community , but also other open movements and open collaboration initiatives. This includes related areas such as open online communities , collaborative creation of multimedia content (with or without wikis), and open journalism and publishing , just to list a few examples.
WikiSym 2010, The International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration, that will take place is recieving proposals until March 7.

CoP portal before community building We helped a loose network of NGOs set up their CoP portal, with the help of Phase 1 money from a donor development institution. Phase 2 money was for community building, but the money never came. When our next similar project came, we learned from our mistake: we started with community building first. Apin Talisayon’s Weblog – Knowledge Management provides useful TOOLS but it leaves MANY GAPS – Oops! (Learn Learn from My KM Mistakes) Oops! #1.

Today, for instance, the Web is littered with corporate community projects that have little or no traffic or interest. Concern mounts that this dead community litter is the sign of something scary for the health of the social engagement space.
In the corporate environment, dead communities come in no small part from the lack of investment in anything past the launch. With each new hype, new projects form often without appropriate staffing and resources, only to die down or off a short time later. I’m not worried.

It’s a great interview, but in particular two things stand out to the community guy in me.
Social engagement/community building work is absolutely an art form. Community management is a tough gig because it’s primary function is to create art in the form of experiences, products, or relationships that satisfy an emotional need.
