I'm about to shill for Cisco Telepresence --and I know, it's expensive, a bandwidth hog, and blabbedy-blah--but, as per before, you've got to experience it. I'd done a Telepresence session last June (Cisco's Worldwide Inside Sales Group's annual meeting) in the same Cisco facility in Boxborough but in a different room where there was one screen and only me, with a few people each in other locations (London, Singapore, Miami). Last night, we drove out to Boxborough, Mass, to meet with a group attending a conference sponsored by the National Association of Corporate Directors .

With that in mind, it is with great pleasure that I announce something amazing: We are opening our third office. We’ve been proud to count Cisco, Yahoo!, Of course, to open a successful office an innovative culture like the Valley, we needed a heavy hitter. 2009 was an amazing year for Ant’s Eye View. It’s hard to imagine that only 1 year ago, Dustin was starting as employee #1 and we only had 1 office.

Highlights of Cisco's press release is below (with a link to the full release). Intercompany Cisco TelePresence Directory is a Cisco-hosted directory of endpoints, organizations and people with access to Cisco TelePresence endpoints. The directory features a virtual assistant to assist with scheduling meetings between the more than 1000 rooms and 75 customers on Cisco TelePresence exchanges.

Although Cisco has a broader collaboration arsenal than Avaya given its WebEx Connect efforts - at best, that places competitive pressure on IBM and Microsoft in a somewhat traditional way. SaaS, in-and-of-itself is not a sustainable barrier or competitive differential for Cisco.
So should Avaya and Cisco "give up" any notion of disrupting the IM/presence trend within the enterprise? I've posted a lot recently regarding enterprise social messaging ("Twitter for the enterprise"):
