Over the past several weeks, two Cisco events generated a great deal of media coverage (refer to “In The News” below). For those that have not been paying close attention, for some time now Cisco has actively been playing a grand chess game. While the media stories below fail to provide detailed product guidance as to where Cisco is going, the information does provide interesting insight as to how Cisco’s leadership team thinks about collaboration, cloud computing, The company has already made several moves in terms of acquisitions (WebEx, PostPath, Jabber) and strategy (describing a general direction regarding collaboration and SaaS/Cloud computing via WebEx Connect).

When Cisco analyzed the Google Wave announcement, and all the surrounding media buzz, it could have quickly stated that it planned to extend its WebEx Connect platform to support Wave once it proved viable in the market. Cisco could leverage its Jabber acquisition (people, technology) and come out with Wave Connect as an extension of WebEx Connect. OK - so that product/service does not exist yet. But it could.

I'm happy to see a session on the topic for the San Francisco event on Wednesday morning hosted by Chris Schalk, Developer Advocate at Google. The Enterprise group agreed to have representation in ActivityStrea.ms (disclosure, that's Ryan Boyd of Google and me).

Look at Google and Cisco.
On paper, Google’s net worth was about $30 billion at the end of 2008. Stock market investors value Google at $125 billion. Fast Company recently published an article on Cisco Systems’ large-scale adoption of social computing as the main means of working with information and knowledge. Jay Cross and I recently co-authored this piece for CLO Magazine.
